Help bearing noise but cant work out what!! :(

Not sure where I should of started this thread so mods please feel free to move it :)

I've got a bearing noise inside my car but its more confusing than i first thought, its when you go in a straight line so that rules out the front wheels i think because normally if its a front one thats gone it get louder when you turn a corner depending which side it is. jacked the back end up the other day gave the wheels a wobble and a spin the left one has the very quietest sound of something catching abit but doesnt seem to be anywhere near as bad as the sound would suggest something is inside my car :( any one got any ideas?

Thanks everyone :)

Hmm looks like its going to end up more expensive than a wheel bearing :/ haha is there any way to check those things to see which it is?

It probably is a rear wheel bearing, the best way to tell is trake them off and have a look. When you slow down does the noise sound like its winding down and getting deeper ?

cedar do you mean take the front off the drum brake too? yeah it does seem to get louder under the pressure of braking, also the sound is there wether the clutch pedal is up or down so that must rule out anything in the gear box :)

Yes, you'll have to take the drum off and clean it with a solvent, petrol will do. It's surprising the noise the slightest blemish makes, you'll probably find a small section of the hard casing on one of the rollers or the bearing outer has worn. I would buy the bearings before stripping it, they're dirt cheap, and replace them. Best to buy a kit, it includes the oil seal etc.

Got to bring this back to life guys, I've replaced both the rear wheel bearings. the noise went away for a while and now its back again :( i did notice tho that the left hand axel stub had a burn mark on it, off the bearing i assume. Could this mean at some point someone could of kerbed it and bent the axel stub a little bit? but I can't understand why it would just be showing up now when i've owned the car for about 6 months.

Cheers guys

did you replace the inner and outer bearing and use the right grease? didn't over tighten them? they don't like that. it is possible that the stub axle has worn excessively

yeah replaced the bearings as a kit from gsf and it was the more expensive of the bearings they sell i used too. Used the grease that was in the kit. Like I saw there was a noticeable burn mark on the axel stub but I wouldn't really know what a excessively worn stub looked like to be honest :s

swap your wheels around, see if the noise moves. sometimes a tyre wears unevenly and causes a bearing type noise, its called feathering im told.
