Has any one installed gearbox flange springs before ?

gearbox flange rattle, should i put the springs in

My 2 gearbox flanges cups that ive had on my car that hold the drive shafts have a 5mm play/wobble , witch causes rattling when going over small bumps which Im intending to fix next time i take my gearbox off this summer but i want someone on here to say if installing the springs in there is %100 a good idea cause my 1.8 gearbox didnt have them in when i got the car?  so i actually dont know if i should try putting the springs in to stop the rattle.

crazy quiffs kindly sent me some sent me 2 springs with some seals i bought when i was replacing oil seals but I woundered if the springs would cause a problem in the diff?? looked to big and looked like they would pop the oils seals out or break the circlip. I just want to know if any one has installed these before please

I know that the two springs go some gearboxes clearly but do they go in mine?

if the seals had alot of force on them and to have them pushed right on to the gbox cups wouldnt is cause faster seal wearing causeing faster leaking probs or mash up anything? just not 100 percent sure

The reason i never attempted to install the springs was because the old gearbox i took off never had them in and when i brought the replacent 2nd hand box there were no springs in the new box either?

http://www.mk1vw.info/modules.php?name=Tutorials&op=viewtut&id=69 this site has what im talking about about half way down,

Has anyone reinstalled the springs in a box before and know what the crack is with them wether i should install them or not CAN THEY CAUSE PROBLEMS? O_o

P.s ive got a tool to clamp the flange to seal to spring

and i am missing 1 metal springholder  if anyones got one cause i am hoping the springs are the way to go??

Cheers

well thanks for all your relplys ??

well i tryed to put the springs in behind the driveshaft oil seal and managed to put the circlip in and discovered the thing doesnt want to spin now lol so i think the springs are a bad idea, but what to do about the rattle

I had springs on both of mine when I replaced my seals, I found this web site very helpful with lots of info so there might be something in there.
what gearbox codes do you have?

The two boxes where I've replaced seals both had springs. First time I read the Haynes manual that said you needed a puller to get them off…. jeeez they shot off powered by the spring, nearly took my head off.

Right guys thank you so some boxes CLEARLY have springs in them thank you
that site has a page a missed before when someone showed me about it

The spring required a lot of sqaushing which seemed like overkill or to much pressure on the seal? when i took it apart it actuually crushed the seal on the inside where the inner seal ring spring sits
The force was so great the flange wasnt turning ?

I will check the code tommorow defo for you ends in E starts in 020 i think

the site expailns  vw made some changes because of rattling so ill have to read on Been wanting to sort this out for ageeeeeees

cheers

think ive susd it!

there are three types of flange's no puns included
1.  90mm old which ive got which rattles from factory
2.  90mm new which uses a green cone to hold the thinner seal which stops rattling
3.  100mm new which uses a green cone to hold the thinner seal which stops rattling also:dry:So if i want to stop the rattling i have to change my flanges and get hold of number 2 flanges (because they fit the drive shaft lenth)
and get 2 bright green oil seal adaptors which holds the skinnyer seals
and maybe have to rebuild the inside to take the spring , as later gearboxes were modified for it which is a mission i wont attemp i think

5mm play sounds a bit much to me, if it feels like its the diff moving about then your diff bearings have had it an require replacing

hey rub johnny i reconsise the name and the horse from a previous problem you replyed to, hows it going fella!!!

well the play is about 3-4 thinking about it now and its not really coming from the bearings its more coming from where the flange sits on the shaft where the teeth interlock with each other!!

Thought about it today and maybe I could try to get brand new unworn flanges that may fit more snug? which will only work if the teeth do wear slighty creating play?

or (as a a little aid) try to put a thicker washer just behind where the circlip sits as there is maybe 1-2 mm play/space/movement with the origanal flange.

I have to say the bearings dont seem to shot or bad ! but by putting a new diff bearings in would or has to make things a bit tighter. Out of curiousity are diff bearings easy to put in though i may not do it

ah ok then, not a lot you can do then. new flanges are going to set you back more than the cost of another gearbox, but they're NLA anyway so thats out.

and unfortunately even changing to new flanges isnt enough! the diff was also changed it now has a groove in it for the bronze thrust rings. without that you cant add the springs :(

diff bearings are an involved job, not something for the faint hearted! whole box needs stripping down. its well covered on brokes site though! but unless your box is really good I'd say its not worth the effort, live with it or get another box.

however if you do go ahead with the diff bearing change, get yourself a later diff as well then you can fit all the spring kit. just a case of check your gearbox code, look up the ratios inside and pick the right diff.  or you can just swap the diff carrier, get a late type but swap over the old diff gear, put a diff bolt kit in it while you're there

After what you just said i wont be doing open heart surgary on it now , i'll cause more harm then good there

would prefer to get another box with the correct diff but moretime you just dont know what your buying?

As money is kinda tight and i cant fix my old rattling gearbox i might just chuck that back on as i had a similer 1.6 box put on as someoneone sold me a wrong box the unknowing knob

If i get some extra money in I would prefer to get another box , but I want a healthy one on  , dont wana be messing around swaping boxes down the line for extra fun and games im not that sort of guy

Thanks
