Handbrake sticking on

Chuffin annoying problem with my Caddy.
The rear brakes are always seizing on, even if left for only two days!  :banghead: With drums being so big and no weight on the back (compared to the normal MK1 setup) they don?t release themselves when you try driving off. Each time you have to jack it up, remove wheel and whack the drum a few time. It?s usually the passengers side but now the drivers side too. I know its damp in northwern England but this is getting silly.  :dontknow:  :dontknow:
Looked inside the drum and all looks OK. The previous owner renewed the shoes, cylinders and handbrake cables and it looks assembled correctly. He didn?t replace the drums and they look like they are very worn with a strange hack saw tooth pattern on the inside, rather that the usually worn one or two ridges/depression. In about 20 years worth of VW ownership I?ve never had it happen before. I?ve started leaving it in gear with no handbrake but keep forgetting. Any ideas anyone before I replace the drums (and shoes, and bearings and seals)   :x

Check that there is not a ridge worn into the backplate where the shoes sit.  This may not let them sit back causing binding.

My '83 GTI came with the same problem when I bought it.

I took it all apart and cleaned it all up. I use o little bit of copper grease on the backplate where the shoes touch and a bit on pivet points etc. The problem never came back.

Almost certain it?s not the mechanism itself, but will pull it to bits again when I get a mo. Also sure it not a ridge as its never done it at traffic light etc only when left for a few days. Think I?m going to have replace the drums and then everything will be new, will assemble with copper grease everywhere except on the friction material..
