GTD GearBox in a mk1 GTI

Hi all!

I would like any info on a GTD gearbox to fit into a 1983 mk1 1.8 GTI.  Has anyone tried this mod? - any problems etc etc? I've been offered a GTD box (free) and would like to know if anyone has more info on it? equally helpful comments are greatly appreciated- many many thanks :)

I think it would be way too high geared, and while it would technically work, would be no fun to drive.

Thanks for your reply so soon Paul, i've heard that the gear ratios are certainly taller and thats something that got me thinking- especially driving the Golf on motorways would be ideal as i often travel down to see family. Also, I dont know anyone else or havent heard of anyone else (please correct me if i'm wrong) having a GTD box in their GTI? :dontknow:

The GTD box is the mk2 Golf 1.6 Driver box. I think the code is 4E. I would have thought that it would be fine on the GTi engine.

4E isn't even listed as a transmission code, on ETKA.

Any chance you can get the bloke offering it, to confirm the transmission code for you?

Do you mean 4 gears plus 'Economy'? I think the Mk2 driver has 1,2,3,4,E written on the gear knob- I always thought it was an overdrive of some sort as opposed to a proper 5th gear.

I think I meant 4T, but picked the wrong letter. If you have a read on the caddy forum, this is the one they recommend.

It does fit…I've got one in mine. Mind you its coupled to a GTD engine, but i believe it also fitted my 1.8 block…

For a GTI or a turbo diesel Caddy? Do you have a link please?

I have looked on the box as i picked it up today- the code is 4T 24027 and i am led to believe the gears from 1-4 are a slightly closer ratio than a GTI box and the 5th gear is taller?

There's a gear ratio guide on the left, and it shows the ratios are more widely spaced and that 5th would be very tall for your car. For example 1-4 in the GTD box is the same spread as 1-5 in the GTI box.

So are you saying the gearbox wont practically work on a gti block?

No, any 020 box will physically work, but if the ratios are wrong it won't "feel" the same.

Bear in mind the gti,s rev to around 6,000, i know nothing about diesels but what? around 4,000, so the gearing is much higher.
