Golf mk1 cabrio (help) - Front Suspension?

Hi, new to the forum so hello! I?ve had a mk1 cabrio for nearly 2 years now, always had golf?s and love this. However the front suspension is pretty tough, certain holes and bumps in the road make the whole front thud and feel rather uncomfortable. Just getting it in shape for the summer, however the 2 garages ive used both say its fine and nothing can be done. But does anyone have any tips or anything? I know its an old car and ive gone from a mk2 to this but thought someone might advise!

Many thanks!

Hi,

have you checked the condition of your top mounts, made a fantastic differance on myn. Car used to thump/crash through holes, fell it right through the seat. Pictures of some top mounts below to compare. Also if the car has been lowered that will affect the ride.

basically check the distance the steel plate is away from the top of the mount.

new mount just installed, but hasnt changed much in 3k miles

old mount, should have been replaced before they got this bad

If you are unsure if and when the front shocks, bumpstops and top mounts were last changed you can get quality bits for less than @?100 and DIY it in less than 1/2 a day.

This is when we did DJs

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.
