Glad I found this.

On rebuilding my car, noticed this damage to my rear damper top mount, and to think that the car was running around on it for years  

i had the same on mine, where you get the new one?

I got 2 new ones from C + R, I bought them along with my new dampers.
Think they were about ?30 for the pair, but a VW part so you may be able to get them localy from VW.

few tie wraps and a bit gaffer tape that'll last a few years yet.
as you say good job you found it that is some major rust.
