Gearbox

Hi Guys
I was driving my 1989 Clipper Cab (LHD) back from Germany at the weekend and I lost 5th gear halfway back! (Nightmare)…
Any ideas how difficult is it to get a replacement gearbox??  And what price am I looking at?
Managed to drive it back it to Germany VERY slowly, but am having probs trying to track down a replacement gearbox so was wondering how difficult it is back in the UK.

Cheers!

Surprised you can't get a box in Germany! Mk2 box is the same so try for one of those. Pay ?50 up. You may need to change the gearbox drive flanges over though.

Cheers for that! Was told the Mk2 gearbox wouldn't fit so wasn't too sure. Can't find one for love nor money over here at the mo!

loss of 5th gear is usually caused by the lack of gear oil.   5th is the 1st to go.    You could pop the end of your case off and check it.  it's a very simple job.

but,  trannys are a dime a dozen over there so you're probably fine just getting one from someone or a yard.

Do yourself a favor and replace the axle flange seals,  pilot bushing/seal and main shaft seal.    You'll have a oil tight box for many more years.

2 quarts of synthetic gear oil.

Thanks for the tips - I'll pass it on to my mate who will be doing the work for me! I'm not too good myself with mechanics - I was thinking it was going to be a very painful job (expensive!)  Will I definitely be ok with a Mk2 gearbox though? There are plenty of them available but can't find a Mk1 box so if it'll be ok then I'm happy!
