gearbox

had a right beast today, i finally got gearbox off after much cursing and foul luck (threaded drive shaft bolt and split nut on anti-roll bar), goes to put the little screw back in that holds drive for speedo/rev counter etc so i wouldnt lose it and drops it in hole lol. is there any chance if i drain gearbox fluid off that i will be able to find the nut? if i split the box in two (bearing in mind i know nothing about the internals of a gearbox) will springs and bits come flying out at me? any help would be greatly appreciated,

Could always try a magnet on the end of a stick  :dontknow: Worth a go at least

What a bummer   Been hot in Rotherham? . I would turn the box over by hand a few times in all gears with the front wheels in the air , then drop the oil and see what comes out . Don't be tempted to split the box bits will fly unless it's on the bench , the magnet bit well worth trying first .

Good luck with it

Cheers………..

I seem to remember that Snap-On or similar did a magnet on a stick where you could fix the magnet at an angle to the stick and lock it up at that (maybe uselful to help avoid the cogs).

As you will have realised, gearbox oil is pretty thick (as in viscous – not like my bruvver) and this may help trap the screw where it shouldn't.  If it doesn't come out with the oil, you could try filling the box again with (thin) flushing oil (can we still get that stuff ?) or even paraffin and then tip that out, hopefully bringing the screw with it.  The latter idea helped get the extra tooth that I didn't even know was there out of my Elfie's busted Gearbox.
