Gearbox seal/plug/dipstick ?

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum but i've had a mk1 for many years. Sorry it took me so long to find you, and thanks for the good advice so far - i've been doing a lot of homework off this forum and its really helpfull stuff !!!

Question is:
what is the green (on my gearbox anyway) plastic plug on the gearbox just above the starter and close to the block for ?
Should it be open (i can fit a finger in through the gap) ?

i've tried looking it up in Haynes, but i'm not having much luck.
The Golf's an 82 Gti 1.8 with hopefully a standard gearbox.
i dont have the codes but can go check if its necessary.

any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Can't remember exactly, is it where timing marks are hidden?

Welcome by the way, any pics of your mk1 for us?

Cheers
Andy

It sounds like there IS supposed to be a plug in there then !!?!?!?!

Do you know if i can just block it up or whether i need to get the right bits ?

I'll try to get some pics of my golf on here soon guys. Just got a second wind to try and get it finished…. had it for years now !
