gearbox question
can anybody tell me if you turn one of the inner cv joint plates by hand whilst the gearbox is off should both plates move in the same direction or is it normal for them to turn in opposite directions ?
i have a mk1 gearbox which i know is good and both plates turn in the same direction ? would it be posibble to turn by hand if in gear ?
and a mk2 g60 gearbox which ends rotate in opposite direction when turned.
seem to remember being told along time ago that if they spin in the opposite directions the gearbox has a lsd fitted and because one side is being spun it alters the drive to the otherside ? so am i jammy and bought a gearbox with a lsd without realising ? are there any visible signs of a slip diff being fitted.

While it may have an lsd, i think i remember reading once that some go opposite ways and some dont because some g/box,s have springs preloading the cups to prevent viabrations.

I'm afraid to say there's no sure fire way of knowing what diff you have without splitting the box or driving the car.
The term LSD is used to mean various types of diff, it actually refers to a Limited Slip Differential, you can also get TBD (Torque Biasing Differentials from Quaife or Peloquin) as well as various 'locking' differentials (like H'Or)
It is normal with a production differential for the drive flanges to rotate in opposite directions if one is turned. But remember after about 1982 (ish) mk1 Golfs were fitted with 'mini slip' differentials were the diff side gears are preloaded with large springs to make them behave a little more like a locking diff. When these diffs are in very good condition and still tight it is possible for both flanges to rotate in the same direction…

Sorry i know no more, apart from i thought i knew where i had read this and found the article and all it said was later box,s had the springs but no date. So if the g60 box is later which it must be then maybe no lsd.

cheers for the replies, so it sounds like my mk1 gearbox is still in good condition, and my g60 gearbox is a normal gearbox, the seller did say it was the earlier type g60 with better ratio's . so i'll leave in my shed as a spare.

im sure if they turn the same way it indicates a lsd of some type try holding one and spin the other at the same time see if it locks if it does id say fubered diff

i will try it tommorow ben, it's the mk1 gearbox that spin in the same direction so could be like addicted said. gearbox i'm running is fine just something i noticed today and wondered why they acted differently …………………before anybody else says it…

The later type boxes are easy to identify by looking at the output flanges, if there is a green metal sleeve between the flange and the diff casing it is a mini slip (FM onwards). If not, then its an early box (FH etc)..
If its an early box (no green sleeves) AND the flanges rotate in the same direction when one is turned then it DOES have a aftermarket diff..

I did myfirst mk1 G60 swap in 1996 although that was caddy.. I've had a mk1 G60 in my colllection ever since..
Stage 4 usually indicates Jabbasports work, how long ago was it done?
That setup, with a good exhaust will get you 190bhp or there abouts (thats real power, not forum power) is the head and cam stock? swapping to a Piper 285 with a stock head and that charger will give the best all round package, especially in a mk1…
