Gearbox possibilities - g60 engine rod change not cable

hey people iam putting a g60 in my mk1 but what is the best gearbox to use on it?

i have a 16v 2y close ratio box for it at the mo, but i was just wondering if that is the best one to use

Pointless trying to use the 16V box. What is the existing box and year of car?

y is it pointless? the car is a 1983 1.8gti

the gearbox fits on there

There's no need because the ratios for 1-4 are the same as your existing 1.8 GTI box and 5th is actually ever so slightly lower ratio. The 16V revs a bit higher, I suspect 5th was set lower to try limit top speed, or something. In addition, it has 100mm driveshaft flanges where your existing box has 90mm. This means you'd need to source and fit driveshafts from a late scirocco or cabby. The 10mm doesn't make any real world difference, the 90mm ones are still strong enough to cope with high power and the ratios are so similar anyway there is neither an advantage or disadvantage. There is a slight complication involving an uprated clutch but this is easily overcome, use a 16V pressure plate with an 8V friction disc. 16V pressure plates are easily obtainable secondhand.

Basically, its a bit of a "myth" that the 16V is somehow superior to others.

I HAVE GOT 100MM DRIVESHAFTS ALREADY, + IAM USING A 16V KR PRESSURE PLATE AND CLUTCH, WITH A LIGHTEN MK1 FLYWHEEL AND IT FITS FINE THE GEARBOXS BOLTS ON WITH NO TROUBLE AND THE STARTER FITS FINE.

I WAS JUST WONDERING WAT GEARBOX WOULD GET THE BEST OF THE ENGINE,

AS I HAVE A MK2 GOLF ALSO 1.6 DRIVER WITH A WEBER 32/34 RUNING WITH G60 CAM AND A 2Y BOX AND IT JUSTS SEEMS TO GO THROUGH THE REVS SO QUICKLY, DONT GET ME WRONG IT GETS OFF THE LINE QUICLKY AND ACC WELL BUT THE REVS JUST SEEM TO GET EATEN UP

ITS LIKE BY THE TIME I HAVE CHNAGED INTO 3RD, I HAVE TO GO 2 4TH THEN 5TH, IT IS LIKE THAT IN ALL THE GEARS

I DNT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO THE G60
