gearbox help!!

Hi all just wondering if I could get some advice, my gearbox has just gone on my 1988 mk1 gti convertable golf and was wondering if I have to get the exact gearbox match or can I use one form say a mk2 or other models

I created this article:

exactly for this type of situation. It lists the ratios and differences in mounting, driveshaft (CV joint) flange size and reversing light switch which are the pertinant points when adapting a gearbox from one car to another.

The ones with an 020 box are:

Mk1 Golf big block (all convertibles are big block in the UK)
Mk1 Jetta big block
Mk1 SCirocco big block
Mk2 scirocco big block
Mk2 Golf/Jetta big block except G60
Mk3 Golf/Vento 1.6-2.0 except 2.0 16V GTI, VR6

not sure what the KR engined corrados used, or the 2.0 8V ones. Not sure what Passats are any use. Polos are almost all small block (not sure on Diesels?)

all corrados use 02a gearboxes, same with passats. most polos are 085 though the 3 pot one i think has a big block box on it for some reason.

also golf mk3 tdi use the 02a box so add that to the exception list
