Gearbox flange, is this right ?

Have got my box out of my 83 tintop gti at the moment. I have noticed (under all the grime) a green metal cover at the drivers side flange, it doesn't look like it is doing much. Is this correct, or should it be pressed into the box ?

Cheers

Thanks Baz,

Hopefully on the road soon.

In the brokeVW link, there is a picture that shows two G clamps being used as a compression tool. In the picture there looks like the same seal as I have, only it is yellow. But I still don't know if it is supposed to be exposed or not.

I should have said, there is no leaking from the flange and no problems with the box, just doesn't look right.

Cheers

hi

im pretty sure this is normal

I would recommend replacing the cap seals inside the flange when you have the box out , its quite common for them to split & start leaking gear oil , you can still buy them from VW , but i suppose its still easy enough with the gearbox in the car , I have replaced mine.

yes this is normal, everything is just fine. its a seal carrier for the later flange, which uses a larger seal
