gearbox / driveshaft seals and steering column to rack boot.

i tried my local parts man and he said that the seals where the shafts go into the box ( mine are leaking) and the large boot for where the steering column u.j meets the rack are vw parts only. ive just been down to the local dealership but we struggled to find them on their system. Does anyone know of somewhere else that would do these or have vw part numbers for them?? ( A reg '83 1.8gti 5 speed ) :dontknow:

thanks

dave

whats the gearbox code and year stamp, several kits offered depending on the age/code of the box

this is the only one available from VAG:

yeah thats a late car, but no telling if the gearbox is the original or not! the code is on the flat plate on the bottom of the bell housing, you need to note down the whole lot then post it up on here, we can then decode it :)

looks like an 87 box, though the digit '9' cant be correct as its broken down as follows:
DDMMY, so 30 97 ( 8 )7.  my guess is its a 0 not a 9 :)

Suggests you need the later kit, but need a better look at the code to double check all the digits are correct.  The 7G code is basically identical to the FD box but with a 3.65 FD rather than 3.67.

Looking at etka tho they stopped using the 7G in 83, so the last digit cant be a 7 either?  :?

ive zoomed right in on the photo on fone and it does look more like a "0" than a "9", so at the moment it looks like 7G3003.. and its either a 7 or 9 on the end, to the eye it looks more like a 7 but its pretty corroded. Sorry to be a pain!! :)

dunno then

I just remembered its easy to tell the difference between the early & late seals visually though. If you look at the flanges, check to see if there is a green metal slive, if there is its a later type:

020 Flange
