Gearbox 1st gear problem

Hiya, was out driving today and all of a sudden found myself struggling to engage first gear!! All other gears including reverse working fine but it just wouldn't go into first….Eventually it did but its definately not smooth and you have to apply some force.

Any ideas what it might be? :dontknow:

poss worn gear linkage m8, common prob on mk1's

any idea on cost to repair / parts etc?

no idea on price for labour, but there is a step by step guide in the gearchange linkage section :dontknow:

If you follow the guide on this forum it is really easy. I bought the parts kit from Volkswarenhaus, but in the end I bought most of the parts again at the VW dealer. There really is a difference in quality. Don't know what the quality of the GSF parts is tho.

But anyway, it's a nice job to do. Just make sure you get the front of the car as high up as you can so you have some room to move around.

I had the same problem recently, except that my first gear would go in fine when the engine was cold but became impossible once it heated up. Turns out I was running low on gearbox oil, works perfectly now.
