Gearbox 1st and 2nd ratio issue

Hi all

I'm new to the mk1 scene and just collected my first mk1 today.

The car has had a 2.0 block with 1.8 head conversion. My problem however is that 1st and 2nd gear seem be be the same. If anything 1st gear seems to be slightly longer than 2nd, meaning that I'm having to pull away in 2nd all the time.

The previous owner never had the car on the road as it was simply stored but he only recently bought it. Said he ran out of space for it. So he didn't really have an answer to the gearbox issue

The car definitely feels as though its missing a proper 1st gear as hill starts bring a hint of clutch smell with them.

I was wondering if anybody else had experienced this or possibly had some advice for me.

Is it a case of a new gearbox needed? If so what is recommended?

Or am i just being simple?

I'll look forward to any help/ advice

Tom

sounds liek a simple selector problem, you're getting 3rd instead of 1st? have you read thru the gearchange linkage guide from the menu on the left?

Thanks. Yeah i've had a read through the guide. Have ordered some new rods and bushes to hopefully solve the issue. Will give it a go later this week.

quick n dirty way to confirm is manually select 1st directly on the gearbox. if you fiddle around you'll find reverse by the dodgy loud crunch it makes when you select it, then its simple to find 1st from there :)

just dont put too much force into it when you select gears, its possible to overshift and jam the box. did this on a box i was selling to show all gears worked. doh
