gearbox

found a gearbox today at what seems a fair price, and it looks to have possibly been recon`d previously because i can see what seem to be newish gaskets, oil seems nice and clean, also comes with a newish vw clutch assy, but i`ve tried holding one driveshaft flange whilst turning the other side and i just can`t do it..all the boxes that i`ve ever come across before i`ve been able to do this with obviously due to the diff operation.
this just does`nt want to play ball..now it`s a long time since i worked on anything this old.am i missing something thats specific to this box.,could it be that if it`s a rebuilt unit that it`s just tight on the diff bearings/planet gears?
it`s an 020 for a 8v gti cab.

Ive rebuilt dozens of golf boxes & ive always found it quite hard to turn the planetry set with the flanges fitted, they normally have a very heavy duty spring set to take any end float or "play" out of the assembly, that said, if you wind some of the drive shaft bolts into the flanges you should be able to lever them with a screw driver, if the planet gears are broken up you'd have metallic oil or even worse a fractured diff housing

ok then, why do kermits fingers smell of pork?
