Gear ratios
Does any know what the gear ratio was for an 83' 1.6 Mk1 GTi?
Also, on the off chance, the ratio for a Mk2 1.8 16V?
Thank you!

1.6 GTI will be FD
1.8 16V Mk2 GTI will be ABG/2Y
And yes, the 16Vs 5th gear is lower than the 8V - this is not an error, its a common myth that 16Vs have higher ratios!

Sorry, brain fart moment. It is of course an 81 gti.
Would it be possible to put the 16v on a mk1 box? How can I tell? Heading for a rolling road day and need to know the gear ratio. Its a 5 speed box if that helps?
Thanks all

Yes, the 16V will attach to the 1600 gearbox. How come you need to know the gear ratio for a rolling road day? In any case, you can look at the gearbox code (its on the bottom of the bellhousing) and the link will give you the ratios.

It's not a normal RR persay. They jack the car up and take the wheels off, or so i'm told, then bolt things to the discs. I beleive this gives a more accurate reading?
Thank you so much for your advice, i'll pop out and check at lunch time :-)
