Gear problems 5th and revers

Took my car out for the first time today, bought 4 mths ago but been doing work on it and just taxed now the sun is out.

Drove 15 miiles to work fine but on the way home couldn't get fifth gear to work.  also noticed that pulling off in first felt like I was in third with car trying to stall, lots of revs and riding the clutch worked. once going all fine and no unusal noices.

Then tonight went to put it in garage and reverse wouldnt work  went in to reveres but car moved forward.

Any ideas new to Mk1's so any help appreciated before I take it to the local VW garage.

cheers

yea sounds nothing worse than gear linkage problem. Bit of a pain crawling around under car but very cheap to fix.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Car was in garage for new rocker cover gasket so they did it, a clip had come loose!  All sorted and back out enjoying the sun please last for a few more days  :D

Hey i have this exact problem

Complete newbie here fellas..

Got the golf for a banger rally to raise money for my little sister charity… got a bargain and obviously its so cool i want to make sure it survives and keep the beauty afterwards.. Afraid i aint the slightest bit mechanically minded..

Reverse (gera stick depressed etc) activates 1st gear & 5th is clearly 3rd..

So i was wondering.. aside from the amazing guide on complete overhaul of gear stick thing, is there any easy way to realign, and also are there any "gates" for the gears..

Also, what spares would be the best for a (sedate) rally round europe?

the 'gates' are all inside the gearbox, so to start with use the guide to rebuild all the linkage and realign
