The kit i bought from GSF hand about 8 foam rings in it as well as the plastic bearings that you have :)  sying that the kits are only about ?3 from GSF (but you dont get the bars) :D

you might find that a little adjustment will sort 1st out.. is reverse any trouble to find?

Haynes has a pretty good guide on adjustment

for ?3 i'll get one anyway from GSF when I go down with my long list of parts i'm gonna replace..

reverse is no problem at all, but first jeez its tough.. i have to really push across and then i can only tell if i've got it when I set off!.. the gear stick is very loose though!

Do you wait until you are at a standstill before going for first?

I find this method has worked for both my cars.

I think it's down to the syncromesh being tired.

I remember posting about this before and loads of people could only get into first whilst still.

it doesn't make a difference wether i'm still or not..

i've just got the car anyway, so i'm gonna replace the lot anyway just for good measure…

is there a bush for the actual gear stick too?..

This is how you set up the 5 speed gear linkage on a Mk1:

The ball at the base of the gear stick (as seen from inside) is not a seperate part and you need to buy the whole thing which is about ?35!

The bracket that attatches to the steering rack to hold the main selector rod is around the same price, it doesn't show the bush as being a seperate part but for that price I'd hope it comes with the bush inside.

what are the parts i've got already?…

i'm working blind here as my Haynes manual hasn't arrived yet and all i've seen is that Wheeler Dealers dvd.. lol.. i just noticed the bits he replaced.. hehe

a lot of my mk1s had dodgy first gears which id became used to and usually never bothered getting the new linkage but now im getting older my current project will be getting the full overhaul so ill be watching your progress a bit   i used to find on some of them i had to slightly depress the lever as if i was going into reverse almost which i knew was mostly down to engine box swaps/upgrades and badly guestimated adjustments and worn linkeages which i wont drive round about now, badly out of practice with the spanners now though so ill be watching for hints

right found this pic.. its the neuspeed repair kit, but it shows the same bits i'm on about..

i know i dont have the 4 circular foam parts, but i can get those easily enough, its the two larger bits which I dont have, are these available to buy seperately from GSF or ECP?

What are you after?

the support bracket and the stick base?  or the relay lever (arm with blob of rubber)?

I should have all of these used

Gimme a shout if you can't find new.  I think the gear stick base can be got from VW.  You'll probably not find the bracket but try GPC, GSF and VW for them all.

can you tell me their names please?

VW still do the bracket.. think it's something like main shift rod bracket but they can bring up pictures

might be an idea to check the big rubber boot for cracks etc… they're still available to

I've had good success on both GTI and Caddy with replacing just the bushes and the rubber ball thingy, and realigning everything to take into account the movement of the engine mounts over the years.
