gear linkage bushes and bolt??

Right i've just helped fit a gear linkage kit to a mates car the problem is that the bolt at the bottom of the gear stick won't pull up tight enough and there is a bit of play between the lever and the selector rod :? i've snaped 2 bolts already trying to tighten this up and its still lose can i spacer it out at all?? its really anoying. any help much apreciated

I think these bolts wear (and the other half too), resulting in a little play, so you'd need to find and fit a new bolt to properly cure it.

they were new bolts nuts and lock washer, this may sound a bit stupid but could the selector rod be closed up slightly in a vice then re fitted so there is less room for movement?? because they are just not tightening, or spaced out with spacers? it just seems a bit weird as everything is new :dontknow: has anyone else had this problem i thought it would be an easy fix lol

right got it all tightened up but now the car won't go into 1st unless you push it down like your going into reverse  i've tried adjusting the base plate but this makes no difference any ideas?? :dontknow:

the shaft between the gear stick and the first linkage is not set in the right place.

do you mean the selector rod?? we have tried adjusting that acording to the haynes manual, then a few other sugestions from forum members but still the same problems.

yes i do mean the selector rod. (sorry i was stil drunk when i typed it)

stick the car in first at the gearbox end.
put the gear lever where you want first to be.
ask a friend to hold it there.
slip under the car and reconnect the splined shaft.
tighten bolt.
job done.
