Gear change remote query

As above,
Gear change remote decided to pack in this morning and have spent an evening trying to sort a way round it but to no avail :(

My main question being, where can I get a new gear change remote from for a 1600 GTI? Is it a dealer only part?
Also how much would I be looking to pay?

Many thanks :)
Dan

Well its what my dad calls it and what I've heared other people call it.

You know where the gearstick comes from and you have a series of springs and bushes in a contained unit, I mean that.

I'll see if i can get a picture of some sort.

If it's the ball bit that the stick pivots in then you can get it as a repair kit from VW. Part number 255 798 116 A

They're the best part of ?40 but at least you'll know it'll be correct. I've done a few of these on the vans that me and my brother own (same part) and once you get the hang of squeezing the spring and putting the plastic parts in the housing you'll get it done in no time.

Thanks but I'm not sure if I just want the ball, I'd prefer the whole unit as it's not damaged in anyway, its just on the bit underneath the ball where the plastic retainer goes there's something up with it which is making the stick drop and not engage gears.

Sorry, I should have been a bit more clear. It comes with the metal outer surround, white plastic ball and bits which hold the ball, the rubber bit it sits in and the plastic retaining ring that holds it in the bottom.

Ah that sounds about right!

Cheers! :)

there's something up with it which is making the stick drop and not engage gears.

 :dontknow:

It could just be the spring retaining ring has come loose, follow me on this:

Above the pivot ball assembly there's a big spring, this holds the gearstick up and is what you push against to put the car into reverse.

It is held in at the top by a small metal ring that goes around the gearstick and is fairly snug to the stic itself but not too much wider than the spring.

This is held onto the gearstick by a small screw on the side of the ring that screws into a divot in the stick itself. if this has come loose it will make your gearstick drop and might cause you problems. To get it in you'll have to lift the gearstick up and push the top spring down.

Oh dear, I've made a huge stupid error, that part number is for a van because I didn't change the vehicle I was searching on ETKA so ignore the part number. Sorry, I'm still shagged from working far too long in the sun without a break today.

As far as I'm aware GSF will only do a bush kit and shift rods and don't actually do the bits for the gear stick itself. :dontknow:

Hmm I know what you're talking about it's just I don't recall seeing a screw.
On top of the spring there's the circlip right? And thats all I can see above the spring to keep it in place  :dontknow:

Looks like that's mistake number two. No screw on a mk1, only on vans.

Sorry again. :banghead:

Basically the spring needs to be under pressure to push the gearlever up.

Yeah thats what me and my Dad tried to sort today, put a bigger spring on it and made a U clamp but still kept dropping.
Think all I'm missing is a washer where the plastic comes through the pivot ball and where the spring meets it as I don't have one and it has to be a specific size.
Tried making one but again, no success.
Ah well off to VW tomorrow.

Thanks a lot for the help :)
