gear boxes

car ran lovley befor i lowered it, now the inner right hand cv joint  keeps grinding out and failing when i corner (not even hard cornering). also the box has 90mm flanges on it and at the gsf the computers telling me and the staff its spose to have 100mm. its a 1.8 8v gti cabrio 1985 model with mfa if thats any help. what gear box code should i be looking for and where on the gear box do i look? bloke in gsf rekons the box is off a 1.3 or a 1.6 and with it being lowered ( not stupidy low) that the driveshafts are pushing in against the flange causing them to fail. any ideas?

:dontknow: cheers for any input

The gearbox code should be on a sticky label in the boot, mine was stuck to the strengthening beam that goes between the rear inner wings where the shock mount- it's the build code label…. if you can still read it mind!

2nd thing: Otherwise i "think" it's on the bottom of the gearbox, on the diff case… but i am not sure, others may know!

3rd thing: see the gear ratio chart on left of this page, it may shed some light on what box you have and what size drive shaft you should have

The fleet stands at:

'90 Clipper

'95 T4 lwb

'94 T4 lwb

With a car of this age, I would not rely on a sticker in the boot to tell you what gearbox the car has!

There should be a little flat on the lower part of the bell housing which will have the code on it. You may need to clean the surfaces to find it…

The flanges are also interchangeable, so don't rely too much on the size of those in ID'ing your box either.
Not easy to change in a home garage as there are some might strong springs behind them that you will struggle to compress to get the circlips back on.
