Gear box whine

Hi All
 I have a mk1 gti 1.8 cabby with a DX engine, and the gearbox is very noisy/whiney. Is a new box or a rebuild the best option?
 How much should i be willing to pay/should the clutch be changed at the same time?
 Does anyone know what gearboxes(codes) will fit in it and which is the most sturdy. I remember having a diesel box fitted to my mk1 Campaign some years ago is this the best option??

You could buy my gearbox off me.

It is from a 1983 Mk1 GTI.

No whine or crunch on the synchromesh.

The only reason I am changing it is because a Rallye G60 and box is going in its place :-)
