Gear Box Leak !!!

Got a bad leak

Looks like the final drive flange & seal have come out of the diff housing - is this a driveshaft off and tap back in job or more involved?

Before you take anything apart i would power wash / gunk the whole area then when clean look again where the leak is .

Never seen these seals come out before so would assume somethings caused that, bearings, flange come adrift.

Worth a good clean up and some more pics.  I stock the seals etc for both types of flange (early 020 and late 020) if needed.

Cheers Gents - looks like I have a healthy leak via the rocker cover and the sump but on close inspetion it definatly looks like gearbox fluid coming from the diff. When I had Mini's the inboard pot joints were held in the diff by split clips and were easy to push in or pull out - is it the same on the golf? The Haynes is no help saying that the diff and gearbox are beyoung the home mechanic.

If you take the driveshaft CV off and move away in the centre of the flange is a dust seal.  Behind that is a circlip and spring washer.  Removing the circlip releases the flange.  You'll need a tool to compress the spring washer.
