Thats the part number for the case. The code is on the underside of the bellhousing and will probably need the area cleaning up to reveal it. THe code will tell you the cars it was fitted to, see left for the gear ratio guide.

Are its flanges 100mm and is your car one with the larger flanges?

If they are the same, or if you're okay to swap them over, then it will still fit.

your gti would be 90mm standard. 2 choices here, either swap 90mm flanges over from your old box, or change the shafts for late cabby/rocco 100mm ones.

check your old box has the green sleeve things for the flange seals, if it has them the flanges will fit the mk2 box, if not they wont.  other option is to find a mk2 1.6 box and nick the flanges off that

Hi John, many thanks for that i will be taking the box out this weekend and hope that i can just swap the flanges over, I have been offered a mk1 1.6 gti box for a 120 pound which i thought was a little high so think i will try the mk2 idea 1st!! I am glad that you are a dub addict as they are slowly dwindling away as mk1 are getting harder to get hold of. whats the best way of upgrading the mk1 to larger front brakes?

few options, if you can find em early square shape audi 80 and scirocco 16v front carriers will allow you to use 256mm calipers, discs & pads. this is the largest oem fit setup you can get.
then there are aftermarket options, can get adaptor brackets off ebay which allow you to fit 280mm calipers, carriers, discs & pads.
another option is the vauxhaul route, can get calipers & carriers which pretty much bolt on in 256 and 280mm sizes, just need shouldered bolts or some sleeves fitted to vaux carriers due to the vaux bolts being bigger. need to use VAG discs and vaux pads + flexi lines.

couple faqs on the subject on here somewhere :)
