front brakes, upgrade to what????????????

hey fellow dubbers, i want to put sum 4 pot big reds on the front of my mk1 golf cabrio (the back is all brand new standard mk1 gti drums.) i am running 16" wheels with 4x100 standard hubs, i would luv 2 put on at least 280mm
the probs r as follows.
1 what size of disc do the front and rear big reds take?
2 can i use REAR big reds on the front of a mk1 golf?
3 and the biggie, where and how much 4 a bracket to fit these monsters onto my wee car?

i had looked into g60/vr6 calipers but thats another pain in the ass which frankly if i need to go 2 all the trouble id rather do the big red thing, looks much better plus i would imagine stop better to.

cheeers 4 reading and i hope like the x-files, there are answers out there, mick………….

As you are running 16" you can go bigger than 280mm!but as said before the calipers stick out so watch out for the offset of you alloys as you might need to spacer the front 20mm.ish.The biggest pain i have found is getting some one to make the brackets.as for the brake hoses i found a company that can make them for around £15 each.As you want to run bigger disc the bracket are on german ebay that fit 302 disc.not 280mm .

hi ideally i would like to squeeze a set of 300mm+ in instead of the 280 but depending on what calipers i get depends on the disc size, just spoke to a guy with porsche 986 rear calipers and he said that he isnt sure if u can put a rear caliper of a porsche on the fron of a mk1 golf, he also ins`t sure on the disc size for these calipers!!!! although he did say that because porsche engine is in the rear the rear calipers do most of the braking, im more confused by every passing minute.

front brakes.

fingers crossed im going with the REAR big reds of off a Porsche 986 Boxster S, thats if some1 can tell me if u can put calipers from the REAR of a porsche onto the FRONT of a golf. i know i need brackets to go between my hub and the caliper but can REAR calipers go on the FRONT?? does the rear caliper have a handbrake part,  will it still work by putting it on the front of a golf?????
so, question time——–
1- can i put REAR calipers of off a Porsche 986 boxter S onto the front of a mk1 golf with standard 4x100 hubs??
2- what size of disc fits the above calipers??
3- where would i get the correct brackets for this conversion??
4- what discs and pads can i use

brake pipes…

my plan is to change the entire brake set up, the master c and brake servo as well as putting new brake pipes in all round and do the fronts as above. i have already fitted a full new mk1 golf gti rear brake drums kit and handbrake cables. i have comming on the way a mk2 golf 22mm master c and a 9" brake servo and when i figure out about the pipes ill order them up and put the master, servo and pipes on together,  when i get the calipers i will buy the braided hoses to fit, but for now i will be running the standard 239mm and changing the rest.

extra time on question time———–
5- are all brake pipes the same, i.e is there a standard diamater of pipe that gets used on most cars?
6- same as q 5 does the flaired ends and the pipe and nuts all stay the same for a mk1 to a mk2?
5/6a - the reaon i ask is that im going to get a new set of pipes made and they will be going into mk1 rear drums, mk2 master and servo and hopfully porsche big reds on the front. so its a mix match of diff parts and im wondering if the pipes, flaired ends and nuts will fit everything..
6- i take it u can get a set of braided hoses that 1 side goes from the mk1 golf screw on the end of the copper pipe and the other that fits onto the above front caliper??

if any1 has any info or help on any of the question please state the question number b4 ur help, thanks and i how u have had a good read…..

Hi mate the reason people use porsche rear calipers is they can fit under 15"alloys.The big red front calipers wont fit under 15" alloys so it depends what alloys you have.As for the discs if you use porsche rear calipers you will need 280mm g60 front disc if you look at my project thread you will see a picture of that setup. as for the adaptors you will need a machine shop to make them.if you go bigger 302mm front disc they sell the adaptors on german ebay for around £125.As for brake pipes i can give you can number for a company that make the pipes to any size for around £15 each.i can give you the measurements and fitting you will need.

thanks 4 that,  i have 16" bbs rc that i bought new for a previous mk1 golf cabrio, what size of disc is the front big reds, would it fit under my 16"`s and could i get discs 4x100 for that size?

u said if i go for the bigger disc 302mm, , do the 302 fit in the rear big reds?

the brake pipe thing, is the pipe the same set up (diamitor of pipe and size of thread on the nuts as well as the amount of pipes i need) or will it change because of the mk2 servo and master?

once again, cheers 4 ur help, mick………

hey ho, slight change of plan, i have mannaged to source a pair of g60 288mm front calipers, carriers, discs, pads, braded hoses and mk2 hubs.
if i am correct alls i need to do is boar out the hole on the mk2 hub to fit the mk1 camber bolt, yes~?????
also what berings do i need?
what bottom ball joints do i need?
where will i get a caliper repair kit and a pair of nipples for the lucas 54`s?

the guy said the setup could go straight on but i may as well do the above while b4 i put it on.

and finally, whats the script with the brake pipes??? because i have mk1 rear drums, mk2 servo and master and mk2 front calipers,,, what pipe setup do i need????????

Mk2 hubs won't fit on a Mk1. G60 brakes are 280mm, not 288mm. You'll need to purchase a set of brackets which will allow fitment of the G60 calipers to the Mk1 hub, which are easily obtainable, albeit a little expensive.

i was under the impression that the mk2 hub would fit with a bit of mod, i`ve been looking over the last week solid on the internet for what i could do and im sure i have seen it on more than a few times that the mk2 hub works..
the guy i got them from said that they were 285mm but i took it as 288 cos i thought there was only 280 or 288, how much we talking for the brackets and where is the best place to get them? cheers mick………..

Who gave you the impression they fitted?

I don't know the other answer, I am using Vauxhall stuff. But I've seen them around on the caddy forum.

they do go on with modification but you need to fit ball joint or track rod spacers otherwise you end up with bump steer. they are thicker where the shocks go on too so that needs grinding down or shocks modified. finally iirc track rods may be too short so you need cut down mk2 ones i think?

some people have just thrown them on without fitting spacers though and clamed all is well, but i wouldnt do this. if you look at the hub you'll see on mk1 steerring arm bit sticks straight out, where mk2 is moved further down.

edit: you may need mk2 track rod ends, and also not sure on the outer cvs i think the mk1 will slot into the mk2 hub though
