The one I have has ridges on it and a 'lip' where it has worn down. Does this make a difference? My friend helping me fit the 1.8t said the clutch will only bite where it touches so if it's got ridges that's where it will bite. Also, being worn down a few mm's doesn't that mean it will be further from the clutch plate so lose some of the clamping pressure?

Very true, but I don't know of any engineering shops near me and surely they will charge more than 40 quid to skim it to make it worth their time.
So for 40 pounds I'd probably prefer to buy a new one - so any idea of who would have them in stock? I'd like to get the 20vt engine in this weekend.

What flywheel is it? As most of the 1.8T have a dual mass flywheel, and your probably best off loosing it whilst you have the chance.
Depending on your engine and gearbox combo most people go for the 228mm flywheel off a 2.0 16v or G60, along with a G60 clutch.
