Err - think I've got a problem with me suspension...

Right - My dad (some of you may know him as SuperPete   ) was checking out an odd rattle that has just started when he noticed that the top of my spring (passenger side, front) has forced its way up past BOTH metal plates…  :banghead:

We reckon that the spring itself will be ok but will need to replace the plate it sits up into and probably the shocks too (will do both sides)…. my question is:

What sort of shocks? My car is lowered (between 60-80mm not sure how much  :dontknow: ) so I guess I can't use standard shocks but have no clue!

Don't want to spend a fortune either! Any suggestions?

Also, will the springs be ok? Can't really afford to replace them as well at the mo!

Any help appreciated!  :D

Cheers

Rach

Cheers for that - can get the metal plate thingy from my local breakers (Stevens in Chelmsford) but as far as I know GSF only sell the standard shocks???

Might have to bite the bullet and do the whole kit and caboodle…..

Hello Rach…
On Saturday i dropped the girlfriends mk1 cab with H&R sport cup kit. (60mm front & 40mm rear)
GSF will sell you a lowered spring but only a standard shock & strut so give that a miss. They do however sell the metal top plates & all bump stops & any bits & bobs. (cheap too!!) so worth replacing any old ones with new.
So are your old shocks & struts standard with a dropped spring? Seen a few budget sets of coilovers in the Performance VW for around ?200 but been told not to expext too much for your money.
Good luck with any work you do.

Hi Lee - just had a look at the ones you mentioned on the Performance alloys website - would you mind pm'ing me the contact details / prices?

Oh - and have you got a pic of the car since you've done the work?

Cheers

Cheers for that Lee - car looks lovely (if you piece the pics together!)

What's the ride like now? Mine is pretty hard at the mo but the pay off is that it handles sooo well! I'd hate to change it all and be disappointed with the handling!

No problem. The ride is nice. Firm but no crashing around like dropped springs & standard shocks/struts.

Looks lovely - don't think I've seen a white cabbie with a Karmann kit before… My step-mum's is an earlier smaller bumper one.

Is your grille badge a Mk2 one? I've never been able to get one for mine (also F reg) as it seems to be chunkier with less horizontal bits!

I reckon I must have standard shocks then cos it crashes about so much!

Yep…! mk2 grille along with mk2 floor pans etc etc as its an F-reg & parts were used for cabs with registrations running parrall with mk2 tin tops at the time.
I have a spare grille in the garage and all the lights & window rubbers. Replaced everything with genuine parts after the re-spray. I'll e.mail you the part number from the grille. (still available from the main "steeler" dealer) even all headlights , inner spots & rear clusters are still available.
Cheers

On the suspension side of things i thinks a fixed height budget set will probably be Jamex / Venom edition / Gmax / Apex even Volks Bits do a budget set of shocks & springs. Look through a Performance VW mag
Good luck
