engine tapping when first started??

Hey guys my engine has recently started tapping when its started up it will stop after about 5 mins when it warms up it sounds like its coming from the top end or alternator area does anyone have any ideas as to what it might be? thanks

Hi ive the same issue , tapping stops after 10 to 15 mins .once warm fine.
Someone told me to engine flush then replace oil with correct oil .
I did this and no difference.

So im open to any help, also my engine is 1.8 carb model :dontknow:

could be tappets, what age is the car? if its a later one with hydro tappets then make sure you have a genuine vw or oem quality MANN oil filter as these have a non-return valve it to stop oil draining out the tappets.

if it has mechanical ones then check the clearances as per haynes
