Desperate for help. Mk1 MOT failure!!

Right I finally got round to putting my 1977 mk1 Scirocco in for its MOT today and as you've probably guessed it's failed. This is technically a mk1 golf in terms of parts as it uses the same chassis!

There's a few little things that are easily rectified and a few bits of welding that need doing.

But my main concern is "rear axle fouling the fuel tank, suspension has inadequate clearance with the chassis"

As the car was originally a carb engine converted to a GTi engine we've come to the conclusion that either a new fuel tank has been fitted incorrectly or the rear axle isn't right.

He has said that the suspension seems too short, but when all the weight was put on the axle the problem was still there so it can't be the suspension.

So does anyone know whether a Scirocco mk1 has a different fuel tank being either injection or carb??? Or is the axle different??

Hopefully a new rear beam should sort it!!!

Any help appreciated!!

or is anyone breakinga mk1 Golf and has either a fuel tank or axle???

on a golf mk1 the fuel tank is different on a carb version than on an injection engine. But I"m quite sure the height is the same.
I can measure this if you like, I own both a mk1 gls automatic 1980 and a 1,8 gti 1983

that's enough for me.

ETKA lists the carb tank as 171 201 075P and 171 201 075Q for the K-Jet.

thats the same on mk1 sciroccos and mk1 golfs.

Does anyone know if a fuel tank from a 1991 Polo GT Coupe will fit??
Part number is 861 201 075F?????

Can you get some photos so we can see where it is fouling ?

Seriously dount a Polo tank will fit.
Carb fuel tank is the same shape as injection, just has different internals.

Can you explain "rear axle fouling the fuel tank, suspension has inadequate clearance with the chassis" any better?

I can't see how the suspension has inadequate clearence with the chassis unless you have done some serious modification! And for the axle to touch the tank, something is not right. At first I thought broken tank support strap, but that would have been made more clear by the tester!?!?

Got me stumped! - Someone hasn't done something silly like wangle a Mk2 Gti axle under there have they?!?!?

Here are a few pics of the offending area:

The MOT tester has highlighted the lack of clearance with chalk.

For your information the spare wheel well has been removed to allow for the centre exit exhaust.

Here's a pic of the car from the side:

I've just spent this afternoon jacking up the car and playing about. i noticed the one strap wasn't fully tightened so i removed the nut with lots of wd40 and then re-tightened and loosesened, and so on till i got it as tight as it would go.

I did this with both sides.

Here's a few pics of my car as a result of today's activities:

Resting the beam on axle stands so the back wheels are off the ground

Plenty of clearance there then when off the ground??

i then dropped the car back down and took the following pics:

i'm not sure if it's made much diffence to be honest???? however when i was tightening the straps I could hear it lifting.

I cannot see that it's touching so hopefully it's sorted. Should there be a minimum clearance??? As the clearance is less than on my mk1 Golf, but I'm 100% it's improved

Sadly you may have excess corrosion on the rear axle beam mounting points . When the weight of the vehicle is on the beam its simply pushing up in to the body .

Whip up the back seat and have a look at the front of the whel arch near the lower seat belt mount there is some gaffer tape covering a hole below is the beam mounting nuts . Whats it like in there ?

Its the only thing i can think can cause the beam to go up . You have a lot of body schultz that may be hiding the problem   :dontknow:

Nice clear pictures , that fuel tank looks like the original so it can't be the wrong Tank .

Please post your solution , when you find it ! Or need more help .

Cheers………..

do you think theres a difference between the first and the second lot of pics???

how much clearance "must" there be???

as it's definitly not touching now

I have a 1980 storm at standard height, if i can mate i will crawl underneath and measure clearance for you so you can compare

yeah that would be good mate.

i have a mk1 golf too. that has slightly more clearance but marginal
