CV boot advice please

I have a carbrio 1.8gti. Can I buy a stretch cv boot and cone kit to fit outer joint, or should I just dismantle driveshaft? Any advice would be great.

You'd have to remove the drive shaft to stretch a new one over anyway. Buy proper kit, the CV joint is held togther with a springy C clip. A tap with a hammer separates it allowing the fitting of a new rubber boot.

Pretty straight forward bolt off - back on. Tricky bits are hub nut is very tight off and back on, the kit should have a new one to put back on.

The gearbox side bolts are quite small multisplines (NOT ALLEN KEY) and usually covered in years of oily muck. Clean out and tap in correct tool or you'll chew them up and have to hammer in bigger ones to get them out.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Thanks. I was thinking it best to remove driveshaft and do job properly and you have convinced me. It looks like a cold Saturday on my driveway this weekend. Cheers.

Driveshaft bolts require an M8 12-splined tool.

It is possible to slide the outer CV boot along the O/S driveshaft (hence you don't need to remove the CV joint from the shaft), but it's much harder to slide one along the N/S shaft as it's twice as thick, although it is possible (just).
