Crunching in 3rd Gear

Recently replaced my clutch cable only to find the car crunching when selecting 3rd gear, i have tried the adjustment on the cable and i have the correct cable so not sure whats happening, the gears are a little sloppy and would probably benefit from a new linkage kit but i wouldn't have thought this would cause the problem, it never happened with the old cable.

Any suggestions

If that's the only difference it must be the cable.  Are all the little clips bits from the lever end and the rubber gasket thing from the top end back on too?  Sounds like it isn't disengaging properly.
