Crunch and grind when i go into second gear

Can someone help please? I have a 1989 Freg 1.8 8v Golf Cabrio and when i put the car into second gear either going up or down it crunches. I hear this is a common problem on this age of car but i really dont know much about this type of problem can anybody advise as i really dont want to be ripped off by someone or is it something i can fix myself?? Any answers will be greatfully recievec.

Its caused by a worn 2nd gear synchro.

Other common faults on the 020 trans include crunching into reverse and popping out of 5th. And the diff rivets eventaully becoming loose, getting jammed somewhere and making an exit out the casing in a dramatic fashion.


There's 2 ways to solve it:
1. Buy another secondhand transmission for ?50, and take a chance on it being okay. Repeat as necessary.
2. Buy a reconditioned transmission, approx ?500

Had this with my 90 GTI cabby mine would crunch into 2nd sometimes have just replaced all the bushes and rods in the gearlinkage and set it up wow what a difference might be worth checking got bits from crazy quiffs and put it this way if I can do it anyone can!!!!!!!!!!

P.S gearchange linkage details on the left were spot on
