Correct Clutch Cable for 1985 Cabrio GTI (1.8 injection)

At present my clutch cable passes through the bulkhead ( badly patched)and runs behind the CIS inlet manifold, under the Airbox to throttle housing plastic and down to the clutch lever. Dealer says this is correct, that it's the diesel version.

Any photos I have seen appear to show the cable coming around the end of the cambelt cover and along the front of the engine.
Which is correct?

p.s clutch is v. heavy due partly to bad bad bulkhead patch where cable rubs

MK1 GTIs and carbs should come round the front of the engine. My 1991 Caddy diesel runs around the back as you describe.

How can a diesel version be 'correct' for a GTI? :dontknow:

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Thanks for your reply. The guy in the dealer parts shop who told me about the diesel cable owns a '83 mk1 GTI. I supposed he knew what he was talking about.

Given that the bulkhead is not in good shape hopefully the shape of the " around the front" cable should give a less stressed profile and ease operation.

I presume that the "around the front" cable can still be sourced.

I've tried to highlight the clutch cable, hope it helps:

Thanks, I can see where it runs. The cable in your photo seems a bit shorter than other photos I have seen where the cable comes around the side of the cam belt cover. In your case it appears to come over the top of the cover

I think it can go round the side alright. From the bulkhead to above the cambelt cover, is a bit 'up', so you could go round the side too, with the same cable.
