Confused Gearbox

Hi, just bought a MK1 Cabriolet. the previous owner neglected to mention the gearbox is very confused. It seemed alright at first and to be honest i was rather absorbed by the lack of roof. + there's enough torque to get going in third. </excuses>

Reverse is a forward gear( not sure which ) first is position is third, as is third position, second is forth as is forth etc. no idea where fifth is. Is the linkage buggered or am I going to need a new gearbox? and if so, how much should I expect to pay for one, and to get it fitted?
