coil over probs help needed!

just fitted coilys on my clipper backs are sound, but i have some serious clearance issues on the front! the inside of the wheel rim catches on the adjusters on the coilovers i'm running 7x15 borbet c's with a et35 offset, the problem is in the image below!

so??? :dontknow: have i done something wrong or is it due to the rims i'm running? :?

Basically, coilovers + wide wheels means problems. It could probably be corrected with different offset (et35 is a negative offset, you need slightly more) or spacers, but I'd never recommend spacers personally.

Or narrower wheels.

well! been & bought some 10mm spacers but they don't cure it either & i don't like spacers anyway so they'll be for sale soon! first time i've used the really! & i've even gone & borrowed some factory vw et38 6j alloys still the same problems,i don't mind getting some new wheels(ideal excuse to the wife really!) but what do i buy?

Have you tried the factory wheels + 10mm spacers?

Or winding the suspension up so the strut doesn't hit the wheel?

can't get hold of any steelies,& yes i've wound them right up & they'll clear just but it's riding higher than the wifes 4x4! & the helper springs are squashed tight like that. clipper synchro anyone!

Camber is all i can suggest

82 Golf Gti. The snail project (abf turbo one day)

Saab 93 diesel daily

Adjusting camber wont work because you would have positive by moving the top of wheel out, spacers are the only solution and will be the same as fitting a different ofset (more sticky out wheel) wheel

positive ain't the look i want! it's negative! so as to the offset i take it, it's a lower offset i need et20 or something?

 i've tried 7j et35 & 6j et38 both with 10mm spacers & both have clearance probs

am i right in thinking et35 with 10mm spacer is effectively et25?

As i see it  yes.

You might run into issues with the tyre rubbing on the wing/wheelarch then. Also there's a limit on what spacers you can use - either really thin ones (so you still have lots of centre bore to mount to) or hubcentric ones which present a centre bore of their own.

I'm scratching my head why standard 6J ET38 wheels don't work out, loads of people have cabbys with coilovers and these kind of wheels.

so i need et10,15 or 20 at the most then? but will i still get probs with et20 or should they clear?

No idea, wouldnt have coil overs on my car, but you should be able to do some rough measuring, one thing though if running a 7 inch rim with lower than et 35 i would think the arch must start to get a bit close to the tyre, others can probably advise on that.

why would you not have coilovers ? Only asking cos iv been thinking of getting some for my clipper.

presumably the ride?

was thinking of going down to a 13 inch rim but don't know what width tbh 5 or 6?

How about 5.5x13" rims with ET38?

et38? thats standard vw offset ain't it? i take it they'd be steelies? what alloys can you get in that size?would they clear do you think? or would i still need the spacers?

i just cannot see any reason to fit them, road cars need suspension travel, a car bouncing around on its bump stops is not the best handling thing out there. Over lowering puts the suspension angles out , i could go on but i wont, each to their own hey.
