Clutch / Steering Problems

Hello Guys,

My friend who has built the Mk1 Rallycar (you may remember my previous posts) has put a 1.8 16v Engine out of a mk2 into his Mk1 Golf.

He is running it with a GTI 8v Gearbox and Clutch.

Now, the seal on the gearbox shaft is leaking, causing the clutch to slip, but we cant work out if it is purely that, or is there another seal, i.e is there /should there be one on the pushrod thats in the centre of the shaft ?
I cant for the live of me work out how the clutch works, ? i'm too used to the "std" one e.g like a mk2 escort or subaru etc….

Also, the steering lock is total crap, any ideas of something better he could use ? something thats a straight swap and better than the rubbish 3.3 turns lock to lock.

Alex.

Try quaife for a 2.9 lock to lock rack. Much better but a little heavy when stationery. Just fitted one myself.

Yes there should be a pushrod seal (and bearing)! Try http://www.brokevw.com for all your gearbox needs!

My quaife 2.9 is actually about 2.5 when in the car… Feels nice and sharp. Don't know of anyone else that does them.
