Clutch slipping at high revs

Hi all,

New member and owner of a Mk1 GTI, have a couple of aircooled dubs - split and early bay ..

Problem i have is the clutch, it bites fine and drives fine until you get to 4th gear at about 4000 rpm then the engine revs up to 6000 but no difference in speed.

No smell of buring clutch

I have checked adjustment and thats fine.

I have tried pulling off in 3rd gear and the engine stalls, i cant get it to slip.

This eliminates the clutch slipping to me ?

Maybe its oil leaking onto the plate only at high revs ..

After searching the forums i see a few people have had the symptoms but i cannot find a resolution.

anyone got any ideas ?

Also what sort of job is a clutch change in one of these  ?

cheers

Try pouring a 3 litre bottle of Coke into the bellhousing and see if that improves things.

Gearbox/clutch change here:

Paul, may i ask why?

I assume, with Coke being the abrasive cleaner it is (try dropping an oxidised penny in a glass) then it will re-juvenate the firction material as well as cleaning the pressure plate face.

The symtoms described usually mean oil contamination of the friction plate. Normally caused by the push rod oil seal leaking... change the clutch and replace the push rod bush and oil seal at the same time...

I agree… And replace the crankshaft main seal while you are there…

Thanks,

i thought it might be oil after reading some other posts .. think i will wait till the warmer weather then get it stripped down.

Have noticed a bit of an oil smell when parked up ( not so much burning but the sort of smell you get at the scrap yard if that makes any sense ! )

Yeah gearbox oil on the clutch will proper stink. Gearbox oil smells funny (as in not nice), while on the other hand auto trans fluid smells not too bad, and petrol is wonderful!

Yeh i would go with a gearbox oil smell ..

guess that leads me to another question.

Is the level likely to last or should i do sooner rather than later ?

Is it easy to check gearbox level or is it a case of fill till it comes out ?

It depends on what year and month your gearbox is made, whether its easy or not. On pre Aug 82 (approx, can't remember) 5 speed boxes (for big block), the level plug is 7mm (equivalent of approx 0.5 litre) below where the gearbox is filled up to. So in theory to check this:

1. Remove level/filler plug and catch the excess fluid
2. If nothing came out, top it up to level.
3. Replace plug
4. Add another 1/2 litre through the speedo cable hole

Which sounds a bit of an arse.

For boxes after, its a simple case of removing the level/filler plug and topping up.

Or just drain it all and add 2 litres… (think that's the right amount?!)
