Just had the mk1 one in the garage today for the brakes doing complete overall. On picking it up was told a road test was done and that they found the clutch slips under load nearly fell though the garage floor when told ?350 for replacement. is this about right or what !! 8O

for the clutch your looking at between ?50-70 depending on which Mk1 you've got (GSF prices)

?350 sounds way too much!

Fitting time (according to the book) is 8.25 hours or so. That's what pushes the price up. Having done this (a more long-winded way!) you'd need either

engine crane + trolley jack

or

2x trolley jacks, one of which is high-lift.

Also, there are a few special tools needed, for example clutch centring tool for this type of clutch (a plastic version came with my clutch kit) and an 8mm 12 spline tool, to undo the driveshafts.

?350 doesn't seem that bad 8.5x?45 per hour. I was quoted the same for changing a clutch on  my family car by a reputitable garage. Obviously if you compare it to DIY mechanics costs it seems expensive. But if you don't have the tools, expertise or time then paying for labour costs.

A VW dealer charges about ?80+ an hour!!!!!!!

Shop around for a better a price but if you have found a good honest garage then use them as good skills IMO are worth paying for.

350 for replacement. is this about right or what !!

Do they throw in a new gearbox as well  . 8.5 hours for a DIYer maybe, but no garage would take that long surely. Had two new clutches in mk1s for about ?150 each (?60 parts - labour about ?35 an hour).

The 8.5 hours figure was taken from Autodata's Workshop Repair Times book, which is the trade guide used to price jobs in a consistent way. Yes, professional mechanics have more/better tools and don't have to stop to scratch their heads, etc but there are still a large number of tasks to do, which you cannot shortcut!

My other half is a mechanic with his own garage and he charges 3hrs labour at ?35,plus clutch.8hrs is way overpriced for a golf.
I would shop around.
