Clutch Help!

Hi,

Excuse my inexperience - but I have had trouble with gear selection recently.

Gears  work  fine with engine off and am sure the selector alignment is good the clutch plates were replaced last year and the car drives with gears engaged  fine.

The clutch operation is not fine though. Basically I have tried changing the cable, the release shaft seems to work  fine with no cable attached (ie. it will lift and fall back as though normal).

However as soon as I attach a cable  everything feels tight until I press the clutch pedal when it all goes soft with no feel until the last inch. Afterwhich the pedal hangs loosely and the release shaft fails to drop back to its natural resting position.

I would just really like to know from the more experienced if I am missing something blatantly obvious ?

My basic assumption is that the cable just pulls up the release shaft when the clutch pedal is depressed and drops it back down when the pedal is released ?? but why have I got no tension ?

Thanks for reading. Any guidance appreciated.

Hi,can the car be driven ok?
If not the release rod may have gone through the pressure plate or the thrust bearing may have colapsed.

The car drives fine - and the clutch grips very well.

Just can't change gear using the clutch ? I guess the gear change got progressively difficult which makes me think something has failed.

The first noticable symptom was that the gears were fine from cold but after about 15mins they started to get sticky until 1st and 2nd would lock out and third would grind a lot worse than usual .

Thanks for your help.

***nothing through clutch at all so I  guess it is the release bearing.  Going to check of the release mechanism****
