Clutch/flywheel size

Can anyone tell me if all 020 gearboxs can take the same size clutch/flywheel?
Both are 5 speed, the one i have is a 7G from a gti and the one im looking at picking up is currently on an audi 3A block.. Still waiting on the code..
Cheers

I think (dont hold me to it) 3a have a different clutch/flywheel set up.
you should be able to get a clutch kit with a 210mm friction plate and should be fine.
biggest that can be fitted to the 020 flywheel.

The gearbox will be going back onto a 3A block, was going to use the DX flywheel clutch and box but its not in good shape..

The flywheel/clutch setup is different in the box my mate has for sale..

If what your saying is right, I can still use the DX flywheel? But get a 210mm clutch plate from the 3A?

I think I still have the 3A flywheel if its needed..

99% sure yes all 020 boxes can take the 210mm flywheel. the reason i assume this is no matter what size the fly is the outer ring gear for the starter motor is still in the same place because any 020 starter motor will fit any 020 box.

main thing is look at the 3 pressure plate, i ont think it will be same as yours. but you'll want to put a new clutch kit in your car anyway id expect and they all come with the pressure plate, just a case of get the right flywheel to fit your clutch kit

Ahh I see what your saying :)

The clutch on the DX is fully incased? And the flywheel is smaller than the one off of the 3A..
I geuss the 3A cant have been running an 020 box?

So I can keep the DX flywheel buy a new 210mm clutch and that can be used on any 020 box..

The 3 pressure plates your on about.. I see them on the 3A But not on the DX?

Thanks for your help :)

yeh the 3a would be from an audi and they have a completly different gearbox so thats why i assumed the clutch bits would be no good. the 020 clutch is ass about face to 'normal' clutches! pp is bolted to engine, then release plate, then friction disc then the flywheel bolts on top.

dx fly should be 210mm ya so as long as its in good nick clean it up and pop it on with a new sachs clutch kit, jobs a goodun.

i meant to say look at the 3a pressure plate, not the 3 pressure plates

Not all 020 will take a 210mm clutch, the FM code box will not take a 210mm clutch as I found out many years ago, don't know if there are any others that won't though.  The casing although looks identical is slightly different inside the bellhousing and is designed for a 200mm clutch, also the output flanges are different on this box.

is that a 4 speed box? i should have been more clear i meant 5 speeds in my post above. but still even if 5 speed if the box is old enough it may not have the clearance for the larger flywheel, or maybe if from montego one or whatever

The flanges are.different from the box im getting to what I have now, but will be having his driveshafts aswell.. Will the spline end that goes into the hub be the same size? Im going up there saturday, I geuss if I get a tape to the clutch plate should answer the flywheel question?

let us know the box code you are getting. if its got 100mm flanges on it though it'll be fine :)

all mk1 splines are the same, however if the shafts are 100mm they wont fit into early bearing carriers as the outer cv is too big, you can fix this problem by grinding out the required clearance on the bearing carriers or outer cvs.

if you dont fancy that and the guy has the bearing carriers as well that'll be ideal, or just get some late cabby/rocco ones.

Its a 5 speed box from a 1.6gti, I thought they were all the same until I tried to fit it to an engine with a 210mm flywheel & clutch, the casing is just very slightly different, 100mm cvs wont fit this either as the casing won't allow it.

I think that it's only some of the really early ones that are affected.

can you not put in the green seal holder thingies for the flanges? but no point running 100mm shafts really if you cant get a 210mm cluch in there anyway! its not like the 90mm cvs are too weak for big power either.

duly noted anyway! maybe if you got yourself a lightened flywheel from hotgolf it might go in, depends where its catching though
