Changing the gearbox

Hi,

I lost first gear on Monday . I have sourced another box and am considering trying to change it myself with a little help from my friends. To be honest i would say I am a novice with regards to car work, I have changed the breaks on the rear and handbreak cable, the usual servicing stuff plus a few other bits.  Would it be a better idea to pay someone to do it? If so how much should i expect to pay?

Also does anyone have a guide on how to change the gear box. I have a haynes manual but its descriptions are not the best in my experience.
