Changing my alloy wheels Bolt size does it matter?
Hi there
I currently have 195/60/14 original snowflake wheels (think thats what they are called)
Im half way through fitting 195/45/15 borbet 6 spoke i have fitted the rear wheels already, and i suddenly thought to check the size of the bolts im using to fit them.
Im just using the original ones does it mateer or do they need to be longer bolts?
i hope some one can help please as the car is propped up in my garage and i need to sort it today lol
thankyou for any help

Poke a bolt through a bolt hole on one of the new wheels with it off and see how much thread is showing and compare that to how much thread shows on the original wheel. If its less you want longer bolts.

the problem is more likely to be the bolt seating is different! aftermarket wheels are tapered and vw uses ball seat. easy fix, go to scrap yard and pilfer wheel bolts off bmws. correct thread, bit longer, tapered seat and use a 17mm bolt head

The borbet actually have a counter sunk hole the same as the original alloys, I rang a garage yesterday they said that vw threads are wider and two threads shorter will be ok as long as I can get in 5-6 turns.
He said to measure the radious of the bolt and as long as te same distance in length thread in it's ok?
Would you agree ?
I haven't fitted them yet just weighing up my options lol

yeah i dont mean counter sunk, i mean the profile of it. vw bolts have like a ball seating on them, most aftermarket are tapered i.e. flat angled. push a blob of blue tak into the hole and you'll see what i mean when you pull it out.
