Changing a short shift Gearbox

Im thinking of buying a mk1 fitted with a short shift gearbox.  how easy would it be to replace this with an original and what sort of money would i have to send sourcing the correct parts?  :dontknow:

do you mean a short shift linkage? usually the gear linkage is modified to get a shorter shift and not the actual gearbox itself

yes, the gear linkage.  Is this a reversible process, i.e. could i put in the normal gear linkage in or has it been permanently changed?  :dontknow:

If it is able to be changed, how much would this cost as I dont think I would be able to do it myself.

you'd be able to do it yourself with a haynes manual easy peasy

wouldn't cost much for original linkage setup

yes you can change it back to standard, vw still sell all the parts of the linkage so you canbuy new, or you might be able to get second hand parts. ive no idea how much the parts would cost or how much a garage would charge to do it.

Come on phil - You can mod your existing linkage to make a short shift, especially if you are a bit handy with the tools…  :wink:
