Cant engage first gear on Series 1 1.1 4speed

Help
We now have the car taxed and MOTed been running around in it and it's becoming increasingly
Hard to engage first gear at all even if you change down when slowing down it still won't go in to first
The box doesn't crunch or grind in any gear the clutch isn't dragging or slipping
I have a new bush kit but this is for a 5 speed and has nothing in common with the 4 speed linkage
Can anyone tell me how to adjust the linkage or give me any help to sort this out.
Any suggestions welcome.
Paul

Dont know if this is the correct way of adjusting, cos my Haynes manual is in pieces after leaving it outside during the snow before Christmas  8O

But had to adjust my linkage on a '82 1.6 Diesel, 4 speed the other day as I got fed up of having to push down the gear stick and going half way into the reverse position just to find first gear.  Jack the car up high and crawled underneath, where the rod from the gear stick reaches the first joint near the gearbox, there is a m8 bolt/nut (you'll need two 13mm spanners), undo the bolt and remove it the bolt, then pull the rod out of the joint (it is splined) and adjust then put the bolt/nut back in and tighten and see if you've got it right…………..I spent an hour undoing/adjusting,tightening and trying, until i eventually got it right, mind you it would have helped marking the rod more clearly before starting the job

Hi
Thanks for the reply just had a look at it there's a rubber type bush at the gearbox end near the splinned part you mention which has some play in it.
To be honest I've just cut up an empty anti freeze bottle and pushed some round the bush between the bush and its housing ( i know what a bodge ) and can now get a the gears just as it should be.
Had another look in the bush kit it must be from a 5 speed as there's nothing in there remotely like this bush so will have to try and hunt one down in the morning.
Once have new bush fitted will then check the adjustment as you've mentioned

If by doing just a simple bodge you managed to find the "missing first gear", would imagine it should be perfect once you locate the bush kit for the 4 speed   :P  :P
