can't get fifth still!

I couldnt get 5th very often, then got a bush kit and spent all aft fitting it, in the baking sun!, after trial and error getting the linkage back up (this was a good few attempts where I only had reverse, 3rd and 4th. Finally thought i'd got it and its even worse to get 5th now , just took it for a fly down the by pass   and it took a good few attempts to get it  :roll:

although the box feels like brand new with the new bushes. i just really struggle to get 5th, (i followed the guide her on the left which was very helpful btw)

any ideas?

I would check the gearbox mount to see if it is worn beyond economic use.

lol wish it was 4 speed then i wouldnt have to muck about! i left myself open for that.

where is the gearbox mount?

You need to look from underneath and there is a mount that bolts onto the bulk head, it is square looks a bit like a sandwich. These tend to fail after time, another easy check is to accelerate in first gear and suddenly ease off (no brakes) and listen for a thud as you ease off.

Does it go into 5th gear when the engine is off ?

surely the mount wouldn't effect it while the car is standing/engine off ?

I have a similar problem with first, I have fitted a new bush kit and after ( seriously) hours of fiddling it wont go into all gears.

cant get fifth at all, or its so close you wouldnt be able to tell unless driving. pretty sure it isnt the mount as you describe but will have a listen. on another post i have been advised to set the gap to 15mm not 19mm (as per linkage guide on left) so going to have another tinker and will report back.

what did your bush kit consist of
did you replace these on picture 12 ?

As per my earlier post I had a similar problem getting all gears, gave it some more fiddling this evening and I have now cracked it, as per haynes manual 15mm between bracket and G shaped clamp.

I phoned Crazy Quiff earlier and after his advice it really does need to be exactly in the right position. deffo a bit of a git to get right !!

Ive just set it to 15mm and happy days, hit 5th every time without fail.

a handy hint for anyone…. The widest part of the old bush that you take out is exactly 15mm so just wedge that in and get it first time. worked for me.

i duno, i tried measuring mine with a tape measure, but it kept falling back as i tightend the nut, maybe you could just find something 15mm that you can wedge in
