buyin second hand g'boxs

any tips on what to look out for when buying second hand g'boxs? how hard are they to refurb and how much would it cost for the bits to refurb one?

iv got one here thats been laying about in the shed for for about a year and once i find out if its usable or not il get ack to you MalC.thanks anyway scouse.
       so back to the question,can any1 giv me any pointers on what i should look for on a used box.

The only points to check if the box is out are:

- check you can get all the gears by moving the selector shaft by hand
- check the oil level is OK (should be up to the filler plug when level)
- check for leaks at the casing gaskets
- check the input shaft seal for leaks/condition
- check the input shaft spline for wear
- drain the oil, it should be nice and clean
- check the casings for any damage
- check the drive flange seals for leaks
- check for any slack in the diff by rotating one of the drive flanges, the other should move with no slopiness

Any idea where I would be able to get my hands on a good second-hand gearbox for my '90 Cabrio?  Am in Staffordshire, so anywhere close would be ideal … bus fare is a nightmare     Thanks a mil
