bump stops

hi people.
 i have a mk1 cabriolet,just had Eibach pro kit springs fitted all round and Boge gas assisted shocks,the problem is the car is sitting on the bump stops and crashing out while driving,the VW specialist that has been working with me on the car has done vanishing act and i dont no whether i need to cut the bump stops down and if i do by how much.if any1 can help i would be very very gratfull.

well im glad im not the only one!!!
ive got a eibach pro kit on my TD,the rears are fine,the front is sitting on the stops,it drives poor,very bouncy,
I have read the technical bit and eibach state to use standard shockers and bump stops on there site,so i did,i used all new parts,top mounts,bump stops,complete new legs etc,i wasnt happy,called eibach,there useless to be honest,waste of time,they sent me another set of springs,still the same,im still waiting for a phone call,that was 2 weeks ago,

I went out and replaced the brand new oil filled shocks with boge gas turbo inserts,the boge inserts travel 30mm more than the origional oil shocks,so less chance of bottoming out,i put the legs on the car,still on the stops,
I ended up using fiat foam bump stops with the built in corrugated dust covers,there smaller than the vw ones by 30mm,and if they do bottom out its a smooth stop as there softer than rubber,
put the legs back on the car,now sits on the springs and drives ace,and theres still travel before it hits the stops,
I can get you the part number for the fiat stops,there off the new panda,perfect fit,just take the white plastic cap off to fit them,?12 each

thanks for the reply,
i rang venom motorsport to ask them about the problem,they insisted that the eibach springs should fit on standard shocks,i told them that i had uprated the shocks to the turbo gas ones and he stated that i should cut the bump stops in half…..not to keen on that idea,some people have said to cut the bump stops down in relation to how much you drop the car i.e 30/35 mm, would it be easier just to fit the fiat ones do you reckon or just cut them down.its doin my head in cus the poor golf is sat on the drive for nearly 6 weeks and i just had new roof fitted and cant show it off lol

if you cut the vw ones down the dust cap wont fit,thats why i didnt want to do that,the fiat ones are superb,they look like vw parts when there on,im well pleased with them now  :wink:

ok mate well if you could give me part number il pick some up and im guessin thats from fiat themselves.how did you find out about them fittin may i ask  :)

i changed top mounts on a new shape panda,whilst the panda ones were off,i tried them on my new legs  :wink:  i work at a garage and was looking at different ones for a while,the fiat ones were best  8)  just dont tell anyone your running fiat parts  :?

fiat part number for anyone else is I0050702892 these are the bump stops with the corrugated dust covers good for lowered suspension  :wink:

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but this bit may be useful to some. I bought those Fiat bumpstops today, Bert!  :wink: The part number had been superseded, now F0051856851 (they still found them on the system for me though, obviously). For the pair including VAT I parted with ?19.44. You're right, nice corrugated rubber dust covers attached and a shorter foam bumpstop. Hopefully I'll be fitting them next week when I'm changing my top mounts and shocks, will let you know the results. Thanks for the advice, Bert. :P

Update: I've fitted my new Febi top mounts, some gas assisted uprated shocks more suitable for the low springs, and the Fiat bumpstops…and it feels like a new car! I don't think my last shocks were suitable for the low front springs and felt weak as pee when off the car to inspect. Just been out on a test run and gone over all the usual suspects around my road (drain cover, dips and couple of potholes) and it's really good, no bouncing or harsh thudding! Well chuffed! And I did it all myself which is a first, worst bit was the suspension main bolts a bit seized so got a long breaker bar to get the nuts off. I don't think my camber is too far out considering I did it by eye!  :lol:  Drives mint, but will obviously go and get it checked, along with the tracking for peace of mind - don't want to waste good tyres finding out. Sorry for the random thread jacking. I just replaced all four shocks on my cab with boge turbos, then picked up what I think are -30mm koni springs, fitted the front springs last night but didn't get a chance to do the back. Problem now is that the ride is harsh and crashy, any slight dip or hole in the road and I get a bad thump on both sides. When I took the shock off they had no bumpstops, I didn't have any to hand so just put it back together as it came off, I wondering if this is causing the bottoming out?

Only other thing I can think of is that the springs I have got are maybe lower than -30mm. If it is the bumpstops causing this do you think the fiat ones will help? was going to just put the standard springs back on till I read your post. Got to take it all apart again anyway cause the motorfactors gave me the wrong topmounts!!  

Any advice you could give me would be great.

those fiat ones sorted mine out,it will bang if theres no bump stops,the shocker will bottom out  :wink:

Cheers Bert, is it best to use the Fiat ones or can I use oe bumpstops? I'm guessing the oe ones will be too big though?

I think -30mm isn't that low really? But then it's a Cab. If you're not bothered about shelling out extra for the Fiat ones as a precaution, then the Fiat ones are a good buy regardless of whether you really need them or not because they're a nice foam bumpstop that will feel better when in use, allow that bit more travel in the shock, and the dustcover won't rattle or knock as it's collapsable soft rubber. Am I right Bert?  :mrgreen:
P.S - I'm sure you know to get your tracking and camber adjusted afterwards, but if you drive it temporarily without adjustment, imperfections (like repair joins) in the road can bang a lot more than normal which won't help matters. They did in mine anyway.
