Brake compensator/regulator

I have suffered brake failure where all my fluid had disappeared whilst driving.  I got to my destination and found that the rear brake compensator was leaking.  I tightened the connections but it still leaked, on closer inspection, there is what I thought a ball bearing inserted into the casing on the side, this is where my leak was.  I have manged to take out the compensator and found that the ball bearing is in fact made of rubber.  Can anyone tell me what it is/for and can it be repaired?

Anybody any ideas??

Its a replace job i am afraid . But luckily GSF sell them but they are not cheap.

?70.00 :dontknow:

There is no servicable bits in the compensator , i have stripped one to clean and check it but then had to replace it   as it gave to much pedal travel . Brake related parts are always better replaced if faulty on safety grounds . Good luck with it .

Up and running again

Got replacement from Crazyquiff can stop now.  Your right Chudd I should buy new parts but I dont have ?70 at the moment.

Anyway replaced compensator and some brake lines, as I had to cut one off after struggling with the getting OLD conectors un-screwed, put back together then found fuel leak from supply line.  Must of disturbed it when replaceing brake line near fuel pump (looking closer at the rest, this will need replacing soon).  Repaired with 8mm rubber fuel line (12 bar rated) and 6 jubilee clips, all is ok for now.  My golf has really been testing my patience lately seems I fix one thing then another problem occurs.  Still eventually I will have replaced everthing sorted.

One thing the lever and spring on compensator do not appear to be of much use as its never under tension with suspension up or down.

Cheers Cussco

Summers coming now, not such a hardship.  Nothing worse than fixing car in the street in freezing cold conditions.
